proposal for final publication:

In keeping with the theme of family dynamics and growing up, I hope to make a zine/comic book of sorts. I’m not sure exactly what to call it, I’ve never been good with labeling things, but I will be using a copy machine in the production of the contents. I had imagery for a cover of an unborn story printed in offset and would like to use the covers for this final project. The story, although still in process deals specifically with a set of characters I’ve been working with for a while, they as always, are unspecific besides being a mother, father, and two young daughters. For this story I’d like to briefly describe a place where these people exist and then sort of focus on the characters specifically and describe their family dynamic. The text will read similarly to the way I hope it has in all of the publications I have made this semester. something sort of short but heavy and sincere way.

My self-published interest is coming, visually, from a comic that was made by a former classmate/acquaintance, titled “Takes one to know one: Douche Bags (a love story)” by Jordan Fu. I really like the way the pages are layed out and hope that looking at this example will inspire me. I tend to feel confined when working within panels and this example is a comic that lacks panels! The text in this work is also something that I find important when considering how it relates to my final project. In this comic the text is quite important for the composition of the page, in fact, it is just as visually important as the drawings themselves.

Conceptually I’m having a hard time thinking of something specific that is self published which relates directly to what I have in mind for my project, but I think that I am doing what a lot of self-published zine/comic artists are doing by making something that is loosely auto-biographical. Auto-biography is perhaps one of the most common genres in indie comics and I don’t think it would be a stretch to call what I’m doing auto-biographical.

Now, for the specifics of this final publication…
I have printed 80 covers in offset, and would like to use most if not all of the covers so I’m thinking of making an edition of 60 which will make up for any errors and take into account that a few covers were lost in the trimming of the initial prints. this number also takes into account my personal budget which is looking weak. I will be inking and watercoloring the drawings and text that I am working on and will make copies using my friend/enemy the Xerox machine. My budget unfortunately only allows for a very short story, somewhere between 6 and 8 front/back printed pages.

Here are some photos of my artist book! as usual something went wrong in the printing process but I think it ended up alright, the newsprint is no Rives BFK but everything happens for a reason. edition of 6. pages printed using Lithography!
